China’s Xiaomi is getting loads of ink. People think it will destroy the smartphone market as we know it. To a certain extent they are right. Xiaomi riffs off Wal-Mart’s low price model and mixes in a dash of Kmart Blue Light special aka flash sales.
As far as those gems go, Xiaomi is destructive. And giving the devil it’s due, Lei Jun and team are bringing smart phones to the masses. Getting the world connected is a good thing, after all.
What we must keep in mind is that Xiaomi is now and will always be a Chinese Wal-mart. A mid to low end player. It’s dominant innovation gene has been dulled by protectionism and does not appear ready to subsume itself, at least for the time being.
This means that Xiaomi will be another Chinese ‘Mi-too’. A major manufacturer short on originality but low on price. Xiaomi will peddle ‘starter smartphones’ for those who cannot afford more. Utterances to the contrary are simply without merit.
If this were not true, then why did this guy smuggle over 90 IPhones into China and not 90 Xiaomi’s into America?
Until people start peddling organs and kin for Xiaomi gear, it will simply remain a ‘Mi Too’ player.
