Chinese handset makers are in a civil war. Spurred on by the likes of Xiaomi, pretenders are crawling out of the woodwork.
Oppo is one of these and could be a formiddable foe. They may be relatively new to handsets, but more experience than Xiaomi. Another bonus is that for them ‘quality’ is not a term of derision. In fact, they are one of the few firms offering decent build integrity in that space.
What I think most interesting is that they are being aped by Xiaomi or vice-versa. Pictured is their R7, which really, really looks like something Xiaomi is going to launch in six months or so.
It would be easy to claim that Xiaomi had cribbed Oppo’s design because Oppo launched first. In China however, that logic doesn’t fly. It’s not uncommon for suppliers to ‘loan’ product designs to other firms and make a tidy sum in the process. Yeah, I’m looking at you Foxconn.
What I mean is that if Xiaomi needs inspiration for their newest design, the ‘Theorhetically’ ask someone from Foxconn to share the love and pass along that info.
Xiaomi then makes their next, ‘not iPhone clone which looks very much like an iPhone’.
The same may be true for Oppo but I’m not sure. I don’t know people connected to them so your guess is as good as mine. What is for sure is that their newest kit has a strong resemblance to what Xiaomi will supposedly be peddling.
